Soroptimist International of Vallejo Club is set to host its annual Live Your Dreams luncheon at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum on Saturday, recognizing five local women for their tenacity.
For more than 85 years, the organization — comprised of career-driven women — has given back to the community, empowering like-minded women on their journey to success.
This year, after a detailed selection process, five dedicated Vallejo residents will be honored with a “Live Your Dream Award.” Among a plaque and memorable ceremony, the recipients will be presented with a sizable check allowing increased financial freedom.
“Many of these women have gone through struggles in their life,” said 10-year member Josette Lacey. “They may not have a good support system, struggled financially — there really is a variety of challenges that they faced.”
The funds can be used however necessary. “It can mean buying a computer, childcare, or for transportation to get to school,” said Lacey. “It’s really just to help them overcome these struggles and get them closer to reaching their goals.”
The event will begin with a welcome by Soroptimist President Cathy Rojas, followed by an inspirational address from the keynote speaker, District 1 Supervisor Cassandra James.
After the luncheon, catered by Vallejo’s Gracie’s Barbecue, recipients and their invited guests will partake in the awards ceremony followed by the presentation of four new Soroptimist fellows.
A total of 13 Vallejo women applied for the award and underwent meticulous screening to ensure met requirements. In a second round, they met with an interview panel to address detailed questions and retell their unique story. And finally, a selective panel identified the five most eligible women to receive the honorable Live Your Dreams Award.
