In 1966, SIA established Sigma and "S" clubs, providing Soroptimists the opportunity to mentor college and high school age women and girls and to instill within them a desire for volunteerism. Both high school girls and college women face unique gender bias, discrimination and challenges as they grow up and enter the working world. Mentoring girls and women through the sponsorship of a Sigma or "S" club, enables Soroptimists to impart invaluable support and guidance, while providing growth and leadership opportunities. Sigma Societies are formed for college women and S clubs are for high school age girls.
"S" Clubs are service clubs for high school students in our communities. They are considered "projects" of Soroptimist clubs. "S" clubs are a vital part of the high school extracurricular groups and are a great way for high school students to learn about serving others and helping in the community. The "S" clubs in Founder Region focus on helping women and girls improve their lives through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

What do we DO in our community? Our service projects are chosen annually; some are new and some are ongoing. We have tackled diverse local projects such as providing support for homes for women in transition, fulfilling Christmas wish list requests for families in need, sponsoring events that introduce girls to leadership roles in business and health, and supporting and volunteering to help at girls’ soccer camps.
We currently provide well-kits for Genesis House female participants and new mother wellness kits for Fighting Back. We also make reusable period packages that one of our members distributes to women in Nicaragua on an annual trip. She provides women's health education while she distributes the packages.
The Heritage Chamber, a room celebrating the achievements of women and located on the second floor of the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, has been our Permanent Identifying Project since the 1970’s. Recently refurbished, the Chamber also serves as an auditorium for concerts, recitals, and presentations.
This project was selected after long consideration and study by club members. While the museum staff has full latitude in selecting specific displays, they always celebrate women and their contributions to society. Our club supports the room with annual monetary grants. One of our members currently serves on the museum’s board of directors.
